The Harlem Renaissance, also called the New Negro Movement, began around 1918 (just after World War One) and ended in the mid-to-late 1930's, circa 1935-37. It was a flourishing of African American art, literature and philosophy that sought to establish a black identity outside of the prevailing stereotypes. It's considered a fore-runner of the Civil Rights Movement.
